Membership Badges of the New Zealand Motoring Organisations.

New Zealand has two major islands, the North and South Islands and within each island the land is divided into Provinces.

In the past each Province (except Northland (NI) and Westland (SI)) had its own Automobile Association, although initially some of the provinces in the South Island were serviced by the South Island Motor Union (SIMU).  Eventually all were amalgamated into one body, the New Zealand Automobile Association.  However the Provincial identity was retained for a while through a series of name changes that went as follows, using Auckland as an example:  Auckland Automobile Association changed to Automobile Association Auckland changed to Automobile Association Auckland Inc changed to New Zealand Automobile Association Inc.

A catalogue of the badge issues follows.  The order within province is believed to be chronological.  In general terms styles followed the following trend, first issues were locally made and fretted out of brass plate, followed by bolt mounted RAC/SIMU enamel centre types, followed by flat brass, chrome plated badges with AA fretted out (back-plate optional), followed by convex (domed front) issues that had back-plates riveted on, followed by square badges that the province name below the AA, finally with square and rectangular (current issue) AA New Zealand badges.  However, not all of these styles were issued by each Province as shown by the listing that may be useful as a reference for badge-hunters.

With the flat AA's variations can be found showing differences in style to the wings at the top of the badge, it is believed that the first badges were made in England and the style is identical to that of English AA badges.  Some of the later badges were crudely cast in local foundries but it is not known if this was a cost saving practice or because of restrictions in the war years.  Some NZ produced badges have better quality wings but differ in style from the English ones.  With the convex (domed) issues the earliest badges were detailed on both the front and back of the wings, later issues have detail on the front only.
