|A Hare and Tortoise mascot - 'Rien ne sert de courir!', It is no use running! It depicts a standing Hare resting on a sign and mopping his brow. He's looking down at the happy and smug tortoise who has already reached the winning post! The expressions on both animals are outstanding, and capture the scene perfectly. Possibly the very finest of all French animal subject mascots. An amusing and thoughtful piece which has humour, pathos and quality.
The mascot is signed C. Seul and is dated 1911. The cap is integral to the mascot and tells the story. A wonderfully designed, extremely rare piece standing 130mm high. Exceptionally well modelled, finely cast in bronze with a superb patina that only 90 years of age could bring.
