In the November of 1934 the Hawker Hurricane prototype made its first flight under test condition and in 1935 reached a maximum speed of over 315 mph and in so doing became the first British fighter plane to break the 300 mph barrier. Sqdn Ldr John Gillan flew one of the new fighters from Tunhouse, Edinburgh to Northholt, London at an average speed of 408.75 mph this achievement earned him the nickname Downwind Gillan.
